Telegram Bot Games: How They Work and What to Play

A "bot game" on Telegram can mean four quite different things, and the difference decides where it runs, what it costs you and whether there is anything to win. Telegram has added a new way to build games roughly every couple of years without removing the old ones, so all four are still live in chats today. Here is what each one is, and how to check one before you spend anything on it.

The four kinds, at a glance

Inline HTML5 games

The original. Telegram's Gaming Platform lets a bot post a game into any chat as a card; tapping it opens an HTML5 game, and the score goes back to that chat as a leaderboard shared by everyone in it. The social hook is the point — the game is ordinary, but the table of who beat whom sits in a group you are already in. These are always free, because the platform has no way to charge for them.

Mini App games

A Mini App is a full web page rendered inside Telegram, with access to your theme, your language and a signed proof of who you are. Anything that runs in a browser runs here, which is why almost every game built since has been one. They open from a bot, from a link, from an attachment-menu button or from a keyboard button in a chat.

Chat-native games

No game view at all — the bot posts a message, you press an inline button, it edits the message. Werewolf, quiz bots, trivia and turn-based board games are all built this way. It sounds primitive and it ages extremely well: it works on every client, costs nothing to run, and cannot break when a renderer changes.

Stars games

A Mini App that takes Telegram Stars for entries, boxes or upgrades. The payment itself never happens in the app — it happens in Telegram's own payment sheet, which is the single most useful thing to know about this category. The outcome is decided on Telegram's servers

There is a detail in the Bot API that explains a surprising number of these games. Telegram's animated emoji — the die, the dart, the basketball, the football, the bowling ball and the slot machine — are not decorations. When a bot sends one, Telegram's servers decide the result, animate it, and only then tell the bot what it landed on. The bot cannot choose the outcome and cannot know it early.

That makes the emoji a free, tamper-resistant randomiser, and a whole category of dice bots is built on it. It also sets a useful expectation: when the result is genuinely out of the operator's hands, they will say so and show you how to check. How to check a game bot before you play

• Match the username against a source you trust. Lookalike usernames are the cheapest attack there is, and the app on the other end can be a perfect copy. Follow a link from the project's own channel or site rather than from a search result or a forwarded message.
• Payments should open Telegram's sheet. Stars purchases happen in Telegram's interface, not in a form inside the game. A payment screen that lives inside the web view is worth backing out of.
• Nothing legitimate needs a seed phrase. No game requires your wallet's recovery words, ever, for any reason, including "verifying" or "syncing" a balance. See the common Stars scams.
• Find the odds before the first spend. A game that takes money should tell you what it returns. If a published return figure is nowhere on the site, assume the worst rather than the average.
• Check that withdrawals exist and are described. Winning something you cannot move is a scoreboard, not a prize. The rules for getting a prize out should be readable before you put anything in.

Common questions

Do Telegram bot games work on desktop?

Mini Apps and inline games both run in Telegram Desktop and the web client. Individual games can still be built mobile-only, and a few gate themselves behind a phone, but nothing in the platform requires it.

Are they free?

Inline HTML5 games and chat-native games are free by construction. Mini Apps are free to open, and can charge Stars once you are inside — which is the distinction worth watching, because "free to play" and "free" are not the same claim.

Can a game bot read my messages?

Not your private chats. A bot sees messages sent directly to it, and in a group it sees either commands aimed at it or everything, depending on the privacy setting the group admin allowed. A Mini App receives a signed proof of your Telegram identity, not your message history.

Why do so many of them look like casino games?

Because Stars gave every bot a working payment rail overnight, and the simplest thing to build on a payment rail is a wager. The mechanics are cheap to implement and instantly understood. That is a reason to check the return figures, not a reason to assume the worst about the category.

What happens to my progress if I close one?

It lives on the operator's server, keyed to your Telegram account, so closing the app or switching device does not lose it. It also means the operator can take it away, which is a different risk from losing it.
