Telegram Stars Scams and How to Spot Them
The eight Telegram Stars and gift scams you'll actually meet, the tell that gives each one away, and what to do immediately if you've already been caught.
Almost every Telegram Stars scam runs on one of two lies: that Stars can be generated for free by a third party, or that they can be cashed out for real money. Neither is possible. Stars are issued by Telegram and, for ordinary users, they only move one way — money in, no money out. Once you internalise that, most of these schemes fall apart on contact.
The one rule that prevents most of this: never type a Telegram login code, 2FA password, or wallet seed phrase into anything. No legitimate app, bot, marketplace, or support agent will ever ask for them.
Why the two big lies don't work
"Free Star generator"
Stars are a centralised currency on Telegram's servers. Balances change only through Telegram's own systems: a purchase, a gift, a refund, or a payout from a bot or app that holds Stars. There is no external process that can create Stars in your account. A "generator" is a phishing page — its purpose is the login step, not the Stars.
"Cash out your Stars"
Regular users cannot withdraw Stars to money. Telegram does operate a withdrawal path, but it's for bot and channel owners cashing out Stars that other people spent with them, it uses a different rate from the purchase rate, and it enforces a minimum balance, a maximum per transaction, and 2FA. The scams you'll actually encounter
1. The fake login page
How it works: a site or bot promising free Stars, a giveaway entry, or a gift claim asks you to "log in with Telegram" and then requests the code Telegram just sent you.
Why it's fatal: that code is the login. Handing it over gives away your account, including access to your chats and the ability to scam your contacts in your name.
The tell: any request for a code or 2FA password. Real mini-apps authenticate silently.
2. The seed phrase harvest
How it works: a "wallet connection" or "NFT claim" step asks you to enter your 12- or 24-word recovery phrase to verify ownership.
Why it's fatal: the seed phrase is the wallet. Everything in it will be drained, usually within minutes, and blockchain transactions cannot be reversed.
The tell: real wallet connections open your wallet app and ask you to approve. They never ask you to type words into a form.
3. Advance-fee "you won"
How it works: you've won a large prize. To release it, you must pay a fee, a tax, a gas cost, or reach a minimum balance first.
Why it's fatal: the prize doesn't exist. Once you pay, there's another fee, then another, until you stop.
The tell: any prize that requires an outbound payment to collect.
4. Fake support
How it works: you post publicly about a problem with Stars or a gift. Someone with an official-looking name and avatar DMs you offering to help, then asks for verification details or a "test transfer".
The tell: support that messages you first. Telegram support does not DM users proactively. Report scams to @notoscam.
5. The off-market gift deal
How it works: a seller offers a collectible below marketplace floor, but wants to trade directly rather than through the marketplace — "cheaper without the commission". They ask you to send first.
Why it's fatal: there's no escrow in a DM. Telegram's marketplace and TON marketplaces both settle atomically; a private trade settles on trust alone.

6. The impostor collection
How it works: on a TON marketplace, an NFT uses the artwork and name of a genuine Telegram collectible but belongs to a different, fake collection.
The tell: verify the collection address, not the picture. Anyone can mint an image.
7. The referral pyramid
How it works: an app pays generously for recruiting, and the payouts to early users are funded by deposits from later ones. Legitimate referral bonuses exist; the difference is whether the app has revenue other than recruitment.
The tell: earnings that scale with recruiting rather than with playing, and withdrawal thresholds that keep moving.
8. Cloned mini-apps
How it works: a copy of a popular app with a near-identical name and icon, differing by a character or two, distributed via DM.
The tell: you didn't find it yourself. Reach apps through their official channel or a link you already trust.

- Treat every unsolicited DM as hostile, especially ones with deadlines.
- Keep valuable collectibles in a wallet whose seed phrase has never been typed anywhere.
- Slow down. Urgency is the common ingredient in all of the above. Nothing legitimate expires in the next four minutes.
If it's already happened
- Leaked a login code or 2FA password? Settings → Devices → terminate all other sessions, then change your 2FA password. Do this before anything else.
- Leaked a seed phrase? Create a new wallet and move remaining assets immediately. The old wallet is permanently compromised.
- Paid Stars? Refunds are possible only in limited circumstances and within a limited window; if App Store or Google Play handled billing, use their refund process too.
- Sent TON? It's gone. On-chain transfers are final.
- Report it to @notoscam and warn contacts if your account was used to message them.

Is there any legitimate way to get free Stars?
