Telegram Stars are Telegram's official in-app virtual currency, not a cryptocurrency, for buying digital goods, gifts and services inside Telegram: gifts, paid channel content, bots, mini-app games and tips. You buy them with real money in Settings → My Stars, at about $0.020 a Star in the US App Store or a flat $0.015 on Fragment, and they can't be converted back to money.
The 60-second definition
A Telegram Star is a virtual unit of currency, similar to the coins or gems you see in mobile games. You buy them from Telegram with real money, or earn them free through mini-apps. Once you have Stars in your account, you can spend them inside Telegram on:
- Digital gifts for friends.
- Stickers and emoji packs.
- Premium content from channels and creators.
- Subscriptions to paid bots.
- Mini-app games (gift boxes, boosts, characters).
- Tips for channel owners and livestreamers.
Stars launched in mid-2024 and are now the standard payment rail across Telegram's expanding mini-app and creator ecosystem.
Are Telegram Stars cryptocurrency?
No. Stars are not a cryptocurrency, not a token, and not on any public blockchain. They're a centralized virtual currency that lives on Telegram's servers — closer to V-Bucks (Fortnite) or Robux (Roblox) than to Bitcoin.
That distinction matters in three practical ways:
- No wallet to install. Your Stars are tied to your Telegram account. Open Settings → My Stars to see your balance.
- No on-chain fees. Spending Stars is instant and free. Telegram processes the transaction internally.
- You can't trade them on exchanges. Stars are one-way: real money goes in, but you can't convert your Stars back to dollars or crypto.
Stars vs. Gram (TON): don't confuse them
Gram (formerly Toncoin) is a real cryptocurrency: the coin of TON (The Open Network), a blockchain originally designed by Telegram and now run by an independent foundation. It's a separate thing from Stars.
- Stars = virtual in-app currency, centralized, for purchases inside Telegram.
- Gram = cryptocurrency, decentralized, traded on exchanges, used for NFTs and DeFi.
They occasionally interact: some gifts you buy with Stars can be upgraded into NFT collectibles on the TON blockchain, which you can then move to a TON wallet. But the two currencies themselves don't convert directly to each other.
How do you get Telegram Stars?
Two paths:
Buy them
Open Telegram → Settings → My Stars → Buy More Stars. Telegram bills through your platform's payment system (Apple, Google, or web). As of October 2026, 1,000 Stars cost $19.99 in the US App Store and $15 on Fragment.
Earn them free
Telegram mini-app games hand out free Stars regularly — daily login bonuses, every-few-hours claims, mini-game rewards, referrals, quests, and seasons. How much that adds up to depends entirely on the app's published reward schedule, and it is usually smaller than the headline suggests: a claim cycle paying a Star or two at a time comes to a few hundred Stars a month, not thousands. Do the arithmetic on the app's own numbers before believing any figure, including ours.

How much is one Star worth?
About $0.020 in the US App Store and a flat $0.015 on Fragment, which is paid in Gram. Pack size barely matters: in the US App Store the price per Star stays between $0.0199 and $0.0204 from 100 to 2,500 Stars. Prices in other countries differ with local store tiers and taxes.

Common questions newcomers have
Do my Stars expire?
No. Stars sit on your account indefinitely. They're only lost if your Telegram account is deleted.
Can I send Stars to a friend?
Not directly. You can buy a Star-priced gift and send the gift — the recipient gets the gift, not raw Stars.
Can I get a refund?
Sometimes. Telegram allows refunds in limited circumstances and within a limited window if the Stars haven't been spent on a non-refundable digital good. Apple and Google billing rules also apply on iOS and Android.
Are Stars safe?
Yes, when you stick to official sources. Buy Stars only through Telegram's built-in flow (Settings → My Stars). Avoid third-party "Star generators" or sites asking for your Telegram login — those are scams.
