Telegram Games: Every Kind, How to Play and What to Try

Telegram games are games you play without leaving Telegram: some open as full apps inside the chat, some arrive as a card a friend posts in a group, and a few are built into the app itself, down to a die you can roll by sending a single emoji. None of them need a separate download. This guide sorts out the five kinds, shows how to open each one step by step, where to find good ones, what the crypto "tap-to-earn" games actually are, and what to check before you play anything that asks for money.

The five kinds of games on Telegram

Telegram has added a new way to build games every few years without retiring the old ones, so all five of these are live today. They differ in where the game runs and how you start it.

How to play games in Telegram, kind by kind

Telegram mini games (Mini App games)

Most games built for Telegram in recent years are Mini Apps: web apps that Telegram renders inside its own window, with your Telegram account already signed in. Since late 2024 they can run full-screen in portrait or landscape, which is why they now look and feel like phone games.

1. Open Search. Tap the search bar at the top of your chat list.
2. Switch to the Apps tab. This is Telegram's Mini App Store: the apps you already use at the top, popular apps below.
3. Pick a game, or type its name. Tapping it opens its page with a launch button.
4. Tap the launch button. The game opens over your chats. Close it and most games keep your progress, because it lives on the game's server under your Telegram account.

You can also start a Mini App from a link shaped like t.me/botname/appname, from the menu button next to the message box in a bot's chat, or from a button inside a message. On phones, many Mini Apps can be added to your home screen as a shortcut from the app's own menu. Labels and placement differ a little between the iPhone, Android and desktop apps.

Gaming Platform games (inline games)

The original Telegram games. In 2016 Telegram launched a Gaming Platform that lets a bot post an HTML5 game into any chat as a card with a Play button. The point is the scoreboard: the card keeps high scores for that chat, and when someone beats the record the whole group is told.

1. Open any chat or group you want to play in.
2. Type a game bot's @username followed by a space. If the bot supports inline games, a list appears above the keyboard.
3. Tap a game to post it. It lands in the chat as a card.
4. Tap Play. The game opens; when you finish, your score goes onto the card for everyone in the chat to see and beat.

The built-in emoji games

The fastest games on Telegram need no bot at all. Six emoji are animated games: a die, a dart board, a basketball, a football, a bowling ball and a slot machine. Send one on its own and Telegram plays it out for everyone in the chat.

1. Open any chat, private or group.
2. Send one of those emoji by itself, with no text around it. The die, for instance, is the ordinary game-die emoji from your keyboard.
3. Watch it land. The die rolls 1 to 6, the dart can hit the bullseye, the ball can go in, the slot machine can line up three of a kind.

The result is picked by Telegram's servers, not by your phone, so nobody in the chat can fake a roll. That makes them a quick way to decide who pays for coffee or who goes first, and friends invent their own rules: highest roll wins, first to three baskets, best of five darts.

Chat bots, quizzes and party games

Some of the most played games on Telegram have no game screen at all: a bot posts messages with buttons, and you play by tapping them. Werewolf and mafia bots, trivia bots, word-game bots and chess bots all work this way, and they run on every Telegram client, however old.

1. Find the bot through a source you trust (see where to find games, below) and open its chat.
2. Press Start. Solo games begin right there.
3. For multiplayer games, add the bot to a group. Social deduction games need several players in one group and usually a command to open a lobby; the bot then messages each player their secret role privately.

Telegram also has quizzes of its own. In a group, open the attachment menu, choose Poll and turn on Quiz mode: the poll gets one correct answer. For a full multi-question quiz with a timer and a leaderboard, use @QuizBot, which Telegram built for exactly that.

Where to find Telegram games

• The Apps tab in Search. Telegram's own Mini App Store and the safest starting point, because what is listed there is what Telegram chose to surface, not what someone chose to send you.
• Search by name. Typing a game's name into Search finds its bot. Check the username and the verified badge, if it has one, before opening anything: copies with near-identical names are common.
• @gamebot, Telegram's own demo bot, for the classic Gaming Platform style.
• The game's own website or channel. Following a link from the developer is safer than following one from a forwarded message or a stranger's DM.
• Friends. A game a friend posts in your group is the whole idea of social games on Telegram; just remember the link is only as trustworthy as where they got it.

Game categories, and what's worth playing

Telegram's game catalogue changes every month, so rather than a list of names that goes stale, here is what each category offers and when it is the right pick.

• Arcade. Short runs, one-thumb controls and a score to beat: runners, stackers, flappy-style games. The Gaming Platform was built for these, and group high-score tables are what keep them fun.
• Puzzle. Match-3, block puzzles, sudoku, minesweeper. Good for a quiet five minutes, and many are fully free.
• Word and trivia. Word guessing, anagrams and quiz bots. Quiz polls and @QuizBot cover the trivia side without any third-party bot.
• Party and social deduction. Werewolf, mafia and similar games for a group of friends in one chat. Best with five or more people who are all online at once.
• Casino-style. Slots, plinko, crash, mines, dice and coin flips, usually played for Telegram Stars. These are games of chance for adults (18+): treat what you spend as the price of the entertainment, not as an investment, and look for published odds or return figures before your first round.

Which one is worth your time depends on the moment. With a group that is already chatting, an emoji game or a Gaming Platform card starts in seconds. On your own, a puzzle or arcade Mini App from the Apps tab. With one friend, a duel. Tap-to-earn crypto games, explained

Search for Telegram games and you will run into "tap-to-earn" games quickly. They are Mini Apps, usually with a very simple loop: tap a coin or a character to collect points, buy upgrades that make each tap worth more, invite friends for bonuses, and complete daily tasks such as joining channels. The promise is that the points will later turn into a crypto token, handed out in an "airdrop", that you can trade.

In 2024 the format was the biggest thing on Telegram, with some titles reporting tens or even hundreds of millions of players. The end of that year was far less exciting. Crypto news site Decrypt's review of 2024 described the category as exploding and then imploding: repetitive gameplay, increasingly messy token launches, rules for who qualified changing close to the airdrop, and many players saying their share was worth a few dollars.

Before you spend time or money on one, keep in mind:

• Points are not money. Until a token exists and trades, a points balance is a number on the developer's server, and the conversion rate is whatever they decide on the day.
• A token can be worth very little. Nothing guarantees a launch price, a large airdrop means a lot of people selling at once, and the players in Decrypt's review were disappointed by what theirs turned out to be worth. We are not a financial adviser and this is not investment advice.
• Paid boosts change the maths. Spending Stars or crypto on upgrades turns a free game into a bet on a token that does not exist yet.
• Task lists are advertising. Joining channels and opening other apps is how many of these games earn their own money; it is also how people end up in lookalike apps.
• Airdrops attract scams. Fake "claim your airdrop" bots and sites are common around every big launch. No real airdrop needs your wallet's recovery phrase.

Played for fun with no money in, a tap-to-earn game is harmless. Played as a way to earn, go in expecting little and you will not be disappointed.

Safety checklist before you play

• Check the username against the developer's own site or channel. A near-identical name is the most common trick there is.
• Pay only through Telegram or your own wallet. Buying with Stars opens Telegram's own payment screen, and a crypto payment opens your wallet app, which shows what you are approving. A card form inside the game, or a request to send money to a person, is a reason to leave.
• Never share a login code, password or recovery phrase. No game needs any of them, for any reason.
• Read the permission prompts. A Mini App has to ask before it gets your phone number, location or the right to message you. A simple game has no need for your phone number.
• Know what can and cannot be cashed out. Stars you buy are for spending in Telegram; ordinary users cannot turn them back into money. A game promising otherwise is the warning sign.
• Set a budget for games of chance, keep them for adults, and stop when the budget is gone.

Common questions

Are Telegram games free?

Emoji games, Gaming Platform games and most chat-bot games are free. Mini App games are free to open, and many sell extras or entries for Telegram Stars once you are inside, so "free to play" and "free" are not always the same thing.

Do I need to download anything to play games on Telegram?

No. Every kind of Telegram game runs inside the Telegram app you already have. Some Mini Apps offer a home-screen shortcut, but that is a link, not a separate install.
