Updated November 1, 2026No sign-up. Runs in your browser.

Take your fal-e Hafez online: make a wish, say the old words to Hafez and press the button, and his Divan opens at random on one of its 495 ghazals. Each ghazal comes with its number, the full Persian text and a short reading (tabir) of what it says about your wish. For today, for Yalda night or for a friend far away; free, with no sign-up and nothing to install.

    How to take your fal

    1. Sit quietly for a moment and make your wish (niyyat): hold the wish or question in your heart without saying it aloud.
    2. Then ask Hafez for an answer with the traditional words:
ای حافظ شیرازی! تو محرم هر رازی! تو را به خدا و به شاخ نباتت قسم می‌دهم که هر چه صلاح و مصلحت می‌بینی برایم آشکار و آرزوی مرا برآورده سازی.

"O Hafez of Shiraz, keeper of every secret, I ask you by God and by your Shakh-e Nabat: show me what is best for me and grant my wish."

    3. Press the button and the Divan opens at random on one ghazal.

Poems: the Qazvini–Ghani edition, from Ganjoor (ganjoor.net). The readings were written for this page.

How to take a fal-e Hafez

    1. Sit quietly for a moment, think of your wish or question and hold it in your heart: this is your niyyat.
    2. Say the traditional words to Hafez: "O Hafez of Shiraz, keeper of every secret…".
    3. Press "I've made my wish" and the Divan opens at random on one of its 495 ghazals.
    4. Read the ghazal slowly, find the opening couplet and the line that speaks to you, then read the short reading under it.
    5. If you like, copy the link to your fal or send it in Telegram; the link opens the same ghazal.

By old custom a fal is taken with a calm heart and a clear wish, and only once for each wish. Many people say a short prayer for Hafez before opening the book, and at family gatherings, Yalda above all, the eldest reads each person's fal aloud.

What does niyyat (the wish) mean?

Your niyyat is the wish, question or worry you want Hafez to answer: a journey ahead, someone you are waiting for, a choice you can't make. You don't say it aloud; you hold it in your heart and then open the Divan. The clearer the wish, the easier it is to find the line that answers it.

Fal Hafez with meaning: how to read the tabir

In a fal the opening couplet is usually taken as Hafez's main answer, and the reader also looks for the couplet that fits their own situation. Under every ghazal is a short reading in plain modern Persian that turns the poem's mood into a word about your wish: hope, patience, a warning against pride or pretence, news of a meeting. We wrote these readings for this page; none is copied from another site. A reading is one interpretation, not a verdict, so read the poem too.

Is this a real fal-e Hafez?

Yes, in the sense that matters: the poems are Hafez's own and the pick is truly random. The text is the Qazvini–Ghani edition, the standard printing of the Divan, as Ganjoor publishes it, with the same numbering of its 495 ghazals. When you press the button, your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) picks one, and all 495 ghazals are exactly equally likely, like a book falling open where it will. Nothing about your wish or your fal is stored or sent.

    Who was Hafez?

Khwaja Shams al-Din Muhammad Hafez of Shiraz, the great ghazal poet of the eighth century of the Islamic calendar, lived all his life in Shiraz and died in 792 AH (about 1390 CE); his tomb, the Hafezieh, is still full of visitors who come to read a fal. Iranians call him Lisan al-Ghayb, "the tongue of the unseen", and his Divan sits beside the Quran and the Shahnameh in many Iranian homes. Taking an omen from it, tafa'ul, has been a loved custom for centuries.

    Fal-e Hafez on Yalda night

Yalda, the longest night of the year, falls this year on the night of Monday 30 Azar 1405 (21 December 2026). Families stay up together over pomegranates, watermelon and nuts, and the eldest takes a fal for each person and reads the ghazal aloud. If you are far from family this year, take your Yalda fal here and send the link to the people you love so everyone reads the same poem. Nowruz and Chaharshanbe Suri are fal nights too.
