    How to play Ludo

    1. Choose the rules, 2 to 4 players and how hard the computer plays, then roll. You are red.
    2. A 6 brings a piece out of your yard (in Fia med knuff, a 1 does too), and a 6 always rolls again.
    3. Tap a lit piece to move it by the number rolled. Land on a piece of another colour to send it back to its yard.
    4. The first player with all four pieces home wins.

    Four rule sets

Ludo has a cousin in almost every country, each with its own house rules. This game plays four of them; pick one under the board before your first roll.

RulesBoard hereLeave the yard onWhat is different
Ludo52 squares, a home column of 5a 6a third 6 in a row ends the turn; 2 pieces of one colour block a square
Mensch ärgere dich nicht40 squares, 4 goal squaresa 6a 6 must bring a piece out, and the start square must be cleared first; a roll past the goal is lost
Fia med knuff40 squares, a home row of 4a 1 or a 6a 6 brings out 2 pieces, or 1 to the 6th square; you can't pass your own pieces
Petits chevaux56 squares, a staircase of 6a 6stop exactly in front of the staircase, then climb it on a 1, a 2 and so on up to 6, and a 6 into the centre

In Ludo and Mensch ärgere dich nicht you get up to three rolls while no piece can move, as most families play. In Mensch ärgere dich nicht each player starts with one piece already on the start square, as in Schmidt Spiele's rules.

    Tips to win more

    • Get pieces out early: more pieces on the board means more ways to use each roll.
    • Don't stop just ahead of a rival: a piece 1 to 6 squares in front of another colour can be hit on the next roll.
    • Save the piece in danger: move the piece that could be hit before you push the leader home.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I play Ludo online for free?

Yes. This page is free, needs no download or account and runs in your browser on a phone or a computer.

Can I play Ludo against the computer?

Yes, against one, two or three computer players. On Hard they take every capture they can and keep their pieces out of reach; on Easy they move at random.

What is the difference between Ludo and Mensch ärgere dich nicht?

Mensch ärgere dich nicht is the German version: a shorter track, a goal of four squares, no blocks, and a six that must bring a piece out while any wait in the yard. Ludo has a longer track, a home column into the centre and blocks.

    Is the die fair?

Yes. Every roll is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random generator, so each face from 1 to 6 is equally likely, for you and for the computer.

Play within your limits. Paid rounds cost Telegram Stars or Gram, and every game on Gift Club is built so the house keeps a margin — over enough rounds the maths runs against you, by design. Stars cannot be converted back into money. Treat paid play as entertainment you have budgeted for, set a limit before you start, and play Spark rounds whenever you just want to play.
