9 × 9, 10 mines
On a computer, left click opens a cell and right click flags it. On a phone, switch to Flag or press and hold a cell. Click a number whose mines are all flagged to open the cells around it.

How to play Minesweeper
- Click any cell. The first click is always safe and opens an area.
- A number shows how many mines touch that cell, in the 8 cells around it.
- Mark a cell you know is a mine with a flag.
- Open every cell that is not a mine to win. Open a mine and the game is over.
Controls on a computer and a phone
- Computer: left click opens a cell, right click plants or lifts a flag.
- Phone: tap to open. To flag, press and hold a cell, or switch the board to Flag below it.
- Chording: click a number once all its mines are flagged, and every other cell around it opens at once. It is how fast players clear the board.
Patterns that solve themselves
A 1 in a corner of an open area often has only one closed cell next to it: that cell is the mine. Flag it, and every other cell touching that 1 is safe.
Along a straight edge, the pattern 1-2-1 means the mines sit under both 1s and the cell under the 2 is safe. The pattern 1-1 starting at a wall means the third cell along is safe. Learn these two and most of Beginner plays itself.
Is Minesweeper luck or logic?
Mostly logic. Some boards still leave two closed cells that the numbers cannot tell apart, and then only a guess is left. When you have to guess, guess early, and pick a cell that would open the most if it is safe.
Board sizes and mine density
Expert is harder for two reasons: the board is bigger, and a larger share of it is mines.
| Level | Board | Mines | Share of cells that are mines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 9 × 9 | 10 | 12.3% |
| Intermediate | 16 × 16 | 40 | 15.6% |
| Expert | 30 × 16 | 99 | 20.6% |
Frequently asked questions
Can I play Minesweeper online for free?
Yes. This page is free, has no ads inside the game and needs no download or account. It runs in your browser on a phone or a computer.
Is the first click in Minesweeper always safe?
Here it is. The mines are laid only after your first click, never on that cell or the cells around it, so the first click always opens an area.
How do I flag a mine on my phone?
Press and hold the cell, or switch the board from Dig to Flag and tap. Switch back to Dig to open cells again.
What does the number on a cell mean?
It is how many of the 8 cells around it hide a mine. A cell with no number has no mines around it, which is why the game opens its neighbours for you.
Play within your limits. Paid rounds cost Telegram Stars or Gram, and every game on Gift Club is built so the house keeps a margin — over enough rounds the maths runs against you, by design. Stars cannot be converted back into money. Treat paid play as entertainment you have budgeted for, set a limit before you start, and play Spark rounds whenever you just want to play.
