How to play Snakes and Ladders

    1. Choose 2 to 4 players and your rules, then roll the die. You are red.
    2. Move your token that many squares along the board, from 1 at the bottom left to 100 at the top left, row by row, turning at each edge.
    3. Land on the foot of a ladder and climb to its top. Land on a snake's head and slide down to its tail.
    4. The first token to reach square 100 wins. With the exact finish, a roll that goes past 100 bounces you back.

There is nothing to decide during a game: every move is the roll of the die, so the game is pure luck and children and adults play on equal terms. The game came from India, where it taught that good deeds lift you up and bad ones pull you down.

    The classic board

This board uses the layout of the best-known printed set, Milton Bradley's of 1943: 9 ladders and 10 snakes on a 10 by 10 grid of 100 squares.

    Ladders (climb)Snakes (slide)
    1 to 38, 4 to 14, 9 to 31, 21 to 42, 28 to 84, 36 to 44, 51 to 67, 71 to 91, 80 to 10016 to 6, 47 to 26, 49 to 11, 56 to 53, 62 to 19, 64 to 60, 87 to 24, 93 to 73, 95 to 75, 98 to 78

The longest climb is 28 to 84, and the longest slide is 87 to 24.

    Exact finish or any roll

Exact roll to finish is on by default. You must land on 100 exactly; a roll that takes you past it moves you to 100 and then back by the squares left over, so from 98 a 4 ends on 98 again. Turn it off and any roll that reaches or passes 100 wins, which makes for a shorter game. You can also switch on Roll again on a 6, a common house rule that is off by default. Change the rules before your first roll.

    Tips for family play

    • Play with 4 players: the more tokens, the more often someone slides down a snake, and the longer the game keeps everyone in it.
    • Read the board aloud: with younger children, count the squares together as the token walks.
    • Try both finishes: the exact finish is the classic rule, and any roll finishes is the quick one.

The full rules, the board's history and the house variants are in our Snakes and Ladders rules guide.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I play Snakes and Ladders online for free?

Yes. This page is free, needs no download or account and runs in your browser on a phone or a computer.

How do you play Snakes and Ladders?

Players take turns to roll one die and move their token that many squares from 1 towards 100. A ladder's foot lifts you to its top, a snake's head drops you to its tail, and the first token to reach 100 wins.

What is the classic Snakes and Ladders layout?

    The classic Milton Bradley board of 1943 has 9 ladders (1 to 38, 4 to 14, 9 to 31, 21 to 42, 28 to 84, 36 to 44, 51 to 67, 71 to 91, 80 to 100) and 10 snakes (16 to 6, 47 to 26, 49 to 11, 56 to 53, 62 to 19, 64 to 60, 87 to 24, 93 to 73, 95 to 75, 98 to 78). This game uses it.

Do you need an exact roll to reach 100?

In the classic rule, yes: a roll that overshoots 100 bounces you back by the squares left over. This game starts with that rule on, and you can switch to any roll finishes before you begin.

    Is the die fair?

Yes. Every roll is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random generator, so each face from 1 to 6 is equally likely, for you and for the computer.
