There are two Christmas parties that need games and they need completely different ones. One is fourteen friends in a flat who will happily play anything for three hours. The other is an office party where half the room reports to someone else in it, nobody wants to look stupid, and the whole thing has to work with people standing up holding a drink. Most lists are written as if only the first exists.

Gift-exchange games, and the rules that make them work

The gift exchange is the centrepiece of most Christmas parties, and the three main formats are genuinely different games rather than names for the same thing. Picking the wrong one for your group is the most common way the evening's main event falls flat.

Secret Santa

Everyone draws one name in secret and buys for that person only. Best for groups who know each other, worst for groups who do not — being assigned a stranger produces a scented candle every time. The two rules that matter: a firm budget, stated as a number, and a hard deadline for the draw that is at least two weeks before the party. Draws that happen the week of the party produce panic-bought gifts.

White Elephant

Everyone brings one wrapped gift, nobody is assigned anybody, and the game is the stealing. Players take turns either unwrapping a new gift or stealing one that has already been opened; whoever gets stolen from picks again. It is far better than Secret Santa for a group that does not know each other well, because nobody has to guess a stranger's taste — you just have to bring one genuinely funny or genuinely desirable object.

Three rules keep it from collapsing, and every version that drags is missing one of them:

• Cap the steals. Two or three steals per gift, then it is frozen. Without a cap a popular gift ping-pongs forever and the game never ends.
• One steal per turn, and you cannot steal back immediately.This is the rule people forget, and it is the one preventing two players from locking the game in a loop.
• The first player gets a final turn. They opened blind with nothing to steal, so at the end they may swap with anyone. It costs nothing and it removes the one structural unfairness in the format.

Yankee Swap

Mechanically close to White Elephant — the names are used interchangeably in a lot of places — but usually played with everyone drawing a number for turn order, and often with better gifts and less comedy. Use it when the group wants to actually end up with something they want rather than a novelty.

Games that need nothing but the people in the room

• Christmas film quiz, read aloud. Ten questions, teams of whoever is standing near each other. Works at an office party specifically because teams let quiet people contribute without performing.
• Guess the jumper. Everyone photographs their own jumper before arriving; the photos are shown and the room guesses whose is whose. Better than a jumper contest, which just rewards spending.
• Two truths and a Christmas. Two true family-Christmas stories and one invented. Reliably the best game at an office party, because it makes colleagues into people.
• The present-wrapping race. One box, one roll of paper, one hand behind your back. Sixty seconds. Undignified and very short.
• Charades, category fixed to Christmas films. The constraint does the work, exactly as it does at Halloween.

Bingo and quiz formats, and when they are worth the admin

Christmas bingo is the most-searched printable format of the season and the one most likely to be abandoned halfway. It works in one specific situation: a big room where people arrive at different times and you need something that does not require everybody to start together. Cards handed out at the door, called over the evening, prize at the end.

It does not work as the main event, because bingo has no decisions in it. Anything you can win by not paying attention will not hold a room that is already talking. If you want one structured game as the centrepiece, a quiz with teams beats bingo every time.
