How to Play Keno: Spots, Paytables and the Number Nobody Quotes
How to play keno in four rules and one decision: what marking more tiles actually buys you, why a 78% win rate can still be a losing round, and how to read any keno paytable before you stake.
Keno is one of the oldest gambling formats still in circulation and one of the easiest to explain: you mark some numbers, the house draws some numbers, and you are paid on the overlap. Learning how to play keno takes about ninety seconds. Learning to read a keno paytable takes slightly longer, and it is the part that decides whether you understand what you are buying.
The rules, in full
- A board of numbered tiles is shown. You mark some of them — your spots.
- You choose a stake.
- The house draws a fixed number of tiles at random.
- You are paid according to how many of your spots were drawn — your hits — using the paytable for the number of spots you marked.
That is the entire game. There is no decision after the draw starts, no cash-out, nothing to carry into the next round. Which is why the one decision you do make — how many spots to mark — carries all the weight.
Two board shapes, one game
Traditional lottery keno draws 20 numbers from 80. The version that appears in most modern apps, ours included, draws 10 from 40. The instinct is that the smaller board must be easier, and it is not: in both shapes, any given tile has a 25% chance of being drawn. A tenth of forty and a quarter of eighty come to the same per-tile rate.
What the smaller board changes is ergonomics. Forty tiles fit a phone screen at a size a thumb can hit, and a ten-ball draw is half the animation. When you compare paytables between two keno games, check the board shape first — a multiplier means nothing until you know how many tiles it was drawn from.
Because most keno you will meet is still the 20-from-80 board, here is what hitting every number you picked is worth on it. These are probabilities of the format, not payouts — they come straight out of the combinatorics, so you can check them yourself:

The bottom row is the one worth sitting with. A solid ten-spot — every one of your ten numbers drawn — comes up about once in 8.9 million rounds. That is the prize the marketing is built around, and it is rarer than most people assume a game they can play every four minutes could be.
How many numbers should you pick?
The most common question about how to play keno, and the answer is not the one most guides give. On a well-built game it makes no difference to your expected return — each spot count has its own paytable, tuned to the same percentage. What changes is the shape of your results.
A useful way to hold it: picking more numbers does not make you more likely to be paid well. It makes you more likely to be paid something, while raising the ceiling for the rare rounds where the board cooperates. Picking fewer concentrates everything into one clean question.
The place this breaks is a game whose spot counts are not tuned to the same return — common, and never advertised. If a keno game publishes a single RTP without saying it holds for every spot count, assume some counts are worse than others, and that the most eye-catching one is the worst.
Spots are a volatility dial, not a difficulty setting
This is the part most keno explanations skip. On a well-tuned game, each spot count has its own paytable, and all of them are tuned to the same return. On our Keno every spot count from one to five returns 95%, each landing within two hundredths of a percentage point of the target.
So marking five tiles instead of one does not improve your deal and does not worsen it. It changes the distribution, and the distribution changes a great deal:
- One spot: a 25.00% chance of 3.80×, and nothing else can happen.
- Three spots: 58.91% of rounds pay, topping out at 10.50×.
- Five spots: 78.34% of rounds pay something, and the top rung is 65.00× — about once in 2,611 rounds.
Same money over time. Completely different evening.

Here is the trap, and it is not unique to us — it is structural to keno. At higher spot counts, the lowest paying rung typically returns less than the stake. On our five-spot table, one hit pays 0.84×. On the four-spot table, one hit pays 0.93×.
Those are not rare edge cases. One hit is the single most common paying outcome at both spot counts — 41.65% and 44.43% of rounds respectively. Which produces two very different-looking true statements about the same game:
- 78.34% of five-spot rounds pay something. True.
- 36.69% of five-spot rounds leave you ahead. Also true.
Both describe the identical paytable. A game that advertises the first number without the second is not lying, exactly — it is choosing which true thing to say. When you read any keno paytable, the first thing to do is look at the bottom paying rung and ask whether it clears 1.00×. If it does not, the advertised win rate and your actual chance of profit are different numbers.
Why the low rungs are set below the stake
Not to deceive you — to fund the top. A five-spot table that paid 1.00× for one hit would have to pay far less than 65× for five, because the return has to balance. Shaving the most common outcome is what buys the rare large one. That trade is reasonable and it is how nearly every high-volatility paytable in existence is built. It just needs to be visible, which is why we publish the two columns side by side on the game page.
Things that do not work
Keno attracts more folklore than any format except roulette. For completeness:
- Hot and cold numbers. Every tile is drawn 25% of the time. A tile that came up three rounds running has exactly the same chance as one that has not appeared all session.
- Patterns, diagonals, birthdays. The draw does not know the board's geometry.
- Betting more after a loss. Doubling a stake changes how fast you arrive somewhere, not where you arrive.
- Picking numbers that "nobody else picks". Meaningful in a pari-mutuel lottery where a prize pool is shared. In a fixed-paytable keno there is no pool to share, so it does nothing.
The only real decisions are the spot count and the stake. That is not a criticism of the game — it is what "pure chance" means, and a keno guide promising more is describing a game that does not exist.
What to check before you stake on any keno game
- The board shape. How many tiles, how many drawn. Without both, no multiplier can be compared.
- The published return. Casino keno is notorious for house edges far heavier than other table games — often several times what a slot or a dice game carries. If a keno game will not tell you its RTP, assume it is one of those.
- The bottom rung of the paytable. Does the most common paying outcome clear your stake?
- Whether the draw is verifiable. A committed seed you can check after the fact is the difference between a game that is fair and a game that says it is. Provably fair verification covers what a real check looks like.
