Talk Like a Pirate Day 2026: Pirate Phrases, a Treasure Box and a Sea Battle
Talk Like a Pirate Day is 19 September. Where it came from, the pirate phrases worth knowing, and three ways to play pirate in Telegram today: the Pirate box, the one-day Pirate Day jackpot and Sea Battle, a battleship duel with a friend.
19 September is International Talk Like a Pirate Day — the one day a year when “Ahoy, matey” counts as a normal greeting. It started as a joke between two friends and turned into a holiday half the internet plays along with. Here is where it came from, the pirate phrases worth knowing, and three ways to play pirate in Telegram: a treasure box, a one-day jackpot and a sea battle with a friend.
Where Talk Like a Pirate Day came from
The day was invented in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers, two friends from Oregon. During a game of racquetball one of them got hurt and yelled “Arrr!”, and the idea was born: the world needed a day for talking like a pirate. They picked 19 September because it was the birthday of Summers' ex-wife — a date he was sure to remember.
For years it stayed an in-joke. Then in 2002 humour columnist Dave Barry wrote about it, and the idea spread. There are no rules and nothing to buy: you talk like a pirate, and that is the whole holiday.
Pirate phrases worth knowing
You do not need a script. A handful of words carries a whole conversation:
- Ahoy! — hello. Ahoy, matey! — hello, friend.
- Aye — yes. Aye aye — yes, and I will do it right away.
- Arr! — agreement, excitement, or anything at all. The most useful word of the day.
- Avast! — stop, pay attention.
- Shiver me timbers! — I can't believe it.
- Landlubber — someone who has never been to sea. Mildly rude.
- Booty — treasure. Plunder — to take it.
- Davy Jones' locker — the bottom of the sea, where sunk ships end up.
- Walk the plank — the worst possible end to a meeting.
- Yo-ho-ho! — the sound of a pirate in a good mood.
A few lines to send to the group chat: “Ahoy, crew! Avast yer work, it be Talk Like a Pirate Day.” Or: “Arr, matey — meet me at the tavern at six, and bring yer booty.”
Play pirate in Telegram
Talking like a pirate is free. For the rest of the day, Gift Club — a game mini app inside Telegram — has three pirate things to play. Two of them are new for the holiday.
The Pirate box
The Pirate box is a new treasure chest in the box store: 100 Stars to open, and it always pays in Telegram Stars. The fourteen possible prizes are 30, 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 160, 200, 300, 400, 600 and 700 Stars. Those at the bottom are smaller than the price, so an open can pay back less than it cost. The top prize is seven times the price.

Every open earns XP towards your level too, and on 19 September every open also enters the Pirate Day jackpot below.

The Pirate Day jackpot
The jackpot runs for one day only, from 00:00 UTC on 19 September to 00:00 UTC on 20 September. Every box and scratch card that costs 50 Stars or more takes part, the Pirate box included. Each open of one of them earns a spin of the jackpot wheel, on top of whatever the box or card itself pays.
The treasure is a fixed chest of 91 prizes. Once a prize has been won, it is gone:
- 500 Stars — one of them.
- Diamond Ring — a Telegram gift, five of them.
- Gem — a Telegram gift, five of them.
- 25 Stars — thirty of them.
- 10 Stars — fifty of them.
The app shows how many prizes are left. When the chest is empty or the day is over, the wheel stops, whichever comes first. Gifts you win land in your collection, and from there you can send them to your own Telegram profile, exchange them for Stars or pass them on to a friend.

Play Gift ClubSea Battle: a battleship duel with a friend
No pirate day is complete without a sea battle. Sea Battle is the classic battleship game as a Telegram duel. Each side gets a 7×7 board and four ships, 4, 3, 2 and 2 cells long. You fire at the enemy's waters in turns, and a hit lets you fire again. The first to sink the whole enemy fleet wins.
Send a challenge link to a friend in any chat, or play the bot straight away. Play for free, or put 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 Stars on the match; your opponent matches the stake, and the winner takes 1.90× it. Skill counts: after the first lucky hit, the player who hunts better usually wins. The Sea Battle guide has the full rules and a hunting strategy.

What this app is, plainly
Talk Like a Pirate Day is for everyone. Gift Club's boxes, jackpot and staked matches are not: they cost Stars, they are for adults, and a round can lose — you can spend Stars and win nothing. The return each game is designed to pay back is published in the RTP index, and a round can be checked after the fact with provably fair verification. If all you want is to talk like a pirate, that part costs nothing.
