International Coffee Day is 1 October. It began in 2015 as an event of the International Coffee Organization, and on 10 March 2026 the UN General Assembly made it an official UN day, so 2026 is the first year the whole UN marks it. It celebrates coffee and the millions of farmers who grow it. Below: where the day came from, coffee facts worth knowing, and how to celebrate it in Telegram with the new Coffee box and a one-day jackpot.

When is International Coffee Day?
International Coffee Day falls on 1 October every year. In 2026 that is a Thursday. Some countries keep their own coffee day on another date, and the United States celebrates National Coffee Day two days earlier, on 29 September, which is why US coffee chains often run their deals at the end of September.
Who started International Coffee Day?
The International Coffee Organization, the intergovernmental body of coffee-producing and coffee-drinking countries, led the first International Coffee Day in 2015, launched at Expo 2015 in Milan. Japan was earlier: the All Japan Coffee Association had kept 1 October as a coffee day since 1983.
On 10 March 2026 the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 80/248, which designates 1 October as International Coffee Day and invites the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to help run it together with the ICO. That makes 2026 the first International Coffee Day with official UN status.
Why does the day matter?
Because most of the world's coffee comes from very small farms. According to the UN, up to 25 million coffee-farming households grow about 80% of the world's coffee, and many of them earn little from the crop. The day is meant to celebrate the drink and to draw attention to fair prices and sustainable farming for the people who grow it.
Coffee facts worth knowing
A little coffee trivia for the group chat:
- A coffee bean is a seed. It grows inside a red fruit called the coffee cherry, usually two seeds to a cherry.
- Two species make almost all of it. Arabica and Robusta. Arabica is milder and more aromatic; Robusta is stronger, more bitter and has more caffeine.
- Brazil grows the most. Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia lead world production, and the European Union and the United States drink the most.
- It is the most traded tropical product. The UN calls coffee the world's most widely traded tropical agricultural product.
- The legend starts with goats. The best-known story says an Ethiopian goatherd called Kaldi noticed his goats dancing after eating coffee cherries. It is a legend, not history, but Ethiopia is where Arabica coffee comes from.
How to celebrate International Coffee Day
The simplest way is the traditional one: buy a coffee from a local café or a fair-trade brand, and share a cup with someone. If you celebrate in Telegram, Gift Club — a game mini app inside Telegram — has two coffee things for the day: a new Coffee box and a one-day Coffee Day jackpot.
What is in the Coffee box?
The Coffee box is a new box in the Gift Club box store: 100 Stars to open, and it always pays in Telegram Stars. The fourteen possible prizes are 30, 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 160, 200, 300, 400, 600 and 700 Stars. Those at the bottom are smaller than the price, so an open can pay back less than it cost. The top prize is seven times the price. It takes the place of the Pirate box, which has left the store.

Every open earns XP towards your level too, and on 1 October every open also enters the Coffee Day jackpot below.

How does the Coffee Day jackpot work?
The Coffee Day jackpot runs for one day only, from 00:00 UTC on 1 October to 00:00 UTC on 2 October. Every box that costs more than 30 Stars takes part, the Coffee box included; scratch cards do not. Each open of one of those boxes earns a spin of the jackpot wheel, on top of whatever the box itself pays.
The prize pot is a fixed set of 96 prizes. Once a prize has been won, it is gone:
- Whip Cupcake #237435 — a collectible Telegram gift (NFT) worth 5 GRAM, with the Blueberry Hill model on a Chocolate backdrop. Just one.
- 100 Stars — five of them.
- 50 Stars — ten of them.
- 25 Stars — thirty of them.
- 10 Stars — fifty of them.
The app shows how many prizes are left. When the pot is empty or the day is over, the wheel stops, whichever comes first. Stars land in your balance at once. The Whip Cupcake lands in your collection, and from there you can transfer it to your TON wallet: connect a wallet in Settings, open Gifts & NFTs, choose the NFT and tap Transfer to wallet.

What this app is, plainly
International Coffee Day is for everyone. Gift Club's boxes and jackpot are not: they cost Stars, they are for adults, and an open can lose — you can spend Stars and win nothing. The return each game is designed to pay back is published in the RTP index. If all you want today is a good cup of coffee, that part is up to your café.
