What does a scatter symbol do?
A scatter is the key to a slot's bonus. Most symbols only matter when they line up in the right places; a scatter matters wherever it falls, and what it unlocks is usually a round of free spins, a pick-a-prize game or a wheel. The name comes from exactly that: the symbols can be scattered anywhere and still count.
Some scatters also pay a prize, a multiple of the total stake for landing 3, 4 or 5 of them. Others pay nothing at all and only open the bonus. The paytable says which kind a game has, usually on its own row.
How many scatters do you need for free spins?
Three is the common number, and more scatters often mean more free spins. Some games also let scatters land during free spins to add extra spins, which is called a retrigger. The exact rule is always on the game's paytable or info screen.

What is a wild symbol?
A wild is a joker: it takes the place of whatever symbol would complete a win next to it. Three cherries and a wild on a payline pay as four cherries. Wilds come in many variations. An expanding wild grows to cover its whole reel, a sticky wild stays in place for several spins, and a walking wild moves one reel each spin. Some wilds carry a multiplier for any win they help complete.
Two limits are almost universal. A wild cannot stand in for a scatter, so it never opens free spins on its own behalf, and it usually cannot stand in for other special symbols either. A slot does not need a wild at all: Gift Club's slot has none, because on a pay-anywhere grid a symbol does not need help lining up.
What are scatter pays?
Scatter pays, also sold as "pay anywhere", is a win rule where every symbol behaves like a scatter: it pays for how many land, not where. Gifts of Zeus and Midnight Panda work this way. 25 symbols land on a 5×5 grid, and any symbol that appears 7 or more times pays, wherever the copies are. Cluster pays is a close cousin: there the matching symbols have to touch each other in a group. Both are often paired with cascading reels, where winning symbols clear and new ones fall in.
What do slot machine symbols mean?
Most slots split their symbols into low and high. Low symbols land more often and pay little: card ranks on many video slots, snacks or gems on others. High symbols are the theme's characters and objects, and pay more because they land less. On top of those sit the special symbols: wilds, scatters and bonus symbols.
The classic symbols have a history. According to Wikipedia, Charles Fey of San Francisco built a three-reel machine with five symbols: horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell, which gave the bell to slot machines. A later machine sold fruit-flavoured gum, so lemons, cherries, oranges and plums went on the reels, and a picture of a stick of Bell-Fruit Gum became the BAR symbol.

Do two scatters mean the third is coming?
No. Landing two scatters and missing the third is the most common near miss in slots, and it tells you nothing about the next spin. Each spin is drawn independently, so the chance of a trigger is the same after a near miss as after a blank. Believing otherwise is the gambler's fallacy. In Gift Club the whole spin, free spins included, is fixed by a seed whose hash is published before the stake is taken, and the provably fair checker recomputes whether the bonus should have opened.
