Telegram Secret Chat: How It Works and How to Start One

A Telegram secret chat is a one-on-one conversation with end-to-end encryption that exists only on the two devices taking part. To start one, open the person's profile, tap the "…" menu and choose Start Secret Chat. Normal Telegram chats aren't end-to-end encrypted: they live in Telegram's cloud so you can read them on any device.

How do you start a secret chat on Telegram?

You start it from the other person's profile:

Open the chat with the person and tap their name to open the profile.
Tap the "…" menu.
Choose Start Secret Chat.

It opens as a separate conversation from your normal chat with them. Your existing messages don't move into it.

Are Telegram secret chats really end-to-end encrypted?

Yes. Telegram's FAQ says all messages in secret chats use end-to-end encryption. To check it, compare the encryption key picture in the chat's info with your friend's. Telegram says that if the two images match, the chat is secure.

How does the self-destruct timer work?

Set the timer in the secret chat and new messages vanish after that time. The clock starts when the message is displayed on the other person's screen, which is when it gets two check marks. It doesn't start when you send it.

Does Telegram tell you about screenshots in a secret chat?

It tries to, but you can't rely on it. Telegram says it will try to send a notification, and also that there is no bulletproof way of detecting screenshots on some systems. Anyone can also photograph the screen with another phone, so a secret chat doesn't make a message impossible to copy.

Why did my secret chat disappear?

Most often because you logged out or opened Telegram on a different device. Secret chats are device-specific and aren't part of the cloud, so you can only read them on the device where they began. If you log out, Telegram's FAQ says you lose them all, and they can't be restored from the cloud.
