The New Year's Eve games that work are the ones that survive noise, snacks and a hard deadline at midnight: charades, bingo, a quiz, a predictions game for the year ahead and a countdown to finish. Play the all-ages ones early, the talkier ones after 10, and keep the last half hour for the countdown. Below are the rules for each, split into family, adults and a party over a video call.

In 2026 the night is Thursday 31 December, into Friday 1 January 2027. Player counts and timings below are our rule of thumb, not a published standard.
Which New Year's Eve games work for a family with kids?
The all-ages games are the ones with no losers and short turns: charades, bingo and a time capsule. Start them early, so the youngest players are in on them before they flag.
- New Year charades. Split into two teams. One player gets a word and acts it out with no sound; their team has 60 seconds to guess. Use words from the year, like a film, a trip or a funny thing someone did. The charades generator hands each actor a word on their own phone and keeps it hidden from everyone else.
- Bingo. Each player marks off a card as things happen or numbers are called; first to complete a line calls it. For a home-made version, write a list of things likely tonight (a toast, fireworks heard, a missed call from a relative) and deal 9 squares each. For a ready one, the bingo generator makes a different card for every player, with numbers from 1 to 75 or Christmas words, and a caller that draws the next one.
- Time capsule. Everyone writes one prediction for next year, a wish and a sentence about the year just gone. Fold the pages into an envelope, seal it and open it next New Year's Eve. The game scores itself the following year.
- The early quiz. A round of questions before dinner gives everyone something to do while the food is made. The Christmas trivia quiz has family-friendly questions ready, and it works the week of 31 December too, when the tree is still up.
Which New Year's Eve party games work for adults?
Adult groups do better with games that make people talk than with games that need equipment. These need nothing but the room:
- Two truths and a lie, New Year edition. Each person says three things about their year, two true and one false, and the group votes on the lie. A point for each correct guess. It tells you things you did not know about people you see every week.
- Never Have I Ever, with fingers. Everyone holds up five fingers. Someone says "Never have I ever…" and finishes it with something from the past year; anyone who has done it puts a finger down. Last player with a finger up wins. It is often played with drinks; this version needs none and works the same.
- Year awards. Write 8 to 10 award categories on slips: the best meal, the worst plan that worked, the year's biggest surprise. Each person votes for someone in the room per slip and the host reads the winners out. Keep the categories kind.
- The quiz, in teams. Two to six players per team, a scorer and a no-phones rule for answers. Questions on the year, music and films all work; keep the round to 20 minutes, or the countdown arrives in the middle of it.

Which New Year's Eve games can you play over a video call?
A video call carries talking games and screen-share games, and loses anything that needs a shared table. Charades, a quiz and two truths and a lie all run unchanged. Add two that belong to the call:
- Midnight tour. The new year arrives in Kiribati first and on Baker Island last, so friends in different time zones reach midnight hours apart. Agree a toast for each guest's midnight and keep the call open between them. It turns the wait into the party.
- Bingo in the chat. Make the cards in the bingo generator and paste one to each player as text. Everyone marks their own copy and calls bingo on the call.
Keep a remote party to about ninety minutes with a break in the middle; remote attention is shorter than at a table. More formats for a screen are in virtual Christmas games, and most of them work for New Year too.
How do you plan the night around midnight?
Put the all-ages game first, the talking games in the middle, and nothing complicated in the last half hour. A running order that works for a family evening:
- Early evening: the quiz or bingo while dinner is made.
- After dinner: charades, in teams.
- An hour before midnight: time capsule writing, quietly, with a snack.
- Last 30 minutes: free time, music and phones for messages to relatives.
- Midnight: the countdown.
For adults, swap in two truths and a lie and the year awards after dinner and keep the quiz short.
What is the best way to count down to midnight?
Put a countdown on a screen that everyone can see, and check it against your phone's clock a few minutes early, because a mantel clock is rarely right to the second. The New Year countdown shows the days, hours, minutes and seconds to midnight in your own time zone and has a full-screen mode that counts the last 10 seconds in giant digits. What can you play once the party winds down?
Gift Club, the team behind this page, makes a Telegram Mini App with games and gift boxes. Play a Spark round on the free Sparks the daily streak pays, or play for Stars and Telegram gifts. Stars rounds are paid games for adults, and a round can lose.
