Gram Wallet: Telegram's Built-In Wallet vs the Gram Wallet App

"Gram Wallet" is the name of two different products. Gram Wallet in Telegram is Telegram's own crypto wallet, built into the Telegram app and rolling out to a growing group of users since August 31, 2026. The Gram Wallet app is a separate iOS and Android app from gramwallet.io, built on the MyTonWallet engine in collaboration with Telegram. Both hold Gram (GRAM, the coin formerly called Toncoin) on the TON blockchain, and neither is the older @wallet bot.

What is Gram Wallet in Telegram?

Gram Wallet in Telegram is a crypto wallet that Telegram builds into its own apps, so a Telegram account can hold and send Gram without installing anything. Pavel Durov announced it on July 21, 2026, promising "a native non-custodial Gram wallet to every Telegram app" and "instant zero-fee crypto transactions for over a billion users".

On August 31 he wrote that it was "ready and is now accessible to a select group of users", with a wider rollout over the following weeks. Telegram has not published a help page or a list of countries, so if you don't see it yet, the only thing to do is wait for an app update. Nobody can switch it on for you, and anyone offering to is running a scam (see below).

What is the Gram Wallet app?

The Gram Wallet app is a standalone, self-custodial wallet for iPhone and Android, published at gramwallet.io. Its store listings describe it as created in collaboration with Telegram and built on the core engine behind MyTonWallet, a long-standing TON wallet that renamed itself My Wallet in June 2026. It holds Gram and other tokens on TON, supports several other blockchains, shows Telegram gifts, and connects to apps.

To be sure you have the real one, check the publisher before you install: the App Store lists the seller as Anyway Labs FZCO and Google Play lists the developer as My Wallet Apps Ltd.

Is Gram Wallet custodial or non-custodial?

The app is self-custodial: only you hold the keys, and nobody, the publisher included, can restore it if you lose your recovery phrase.

The built-in wallet is more nuanced. Durov calls it non-custodial, but the documentation of its smart contract says that "Telegram creates a wallet, but allows switching to self-custody". Read together: Telegram sets the wallet up for you, and full control of the keys is something you switch to. Telegram has not yet documented how that switch or account recovery works, so check the wallet's own settings before you keep anything valuable in it.

How do I set up the Gram Wallet app?

1. Install it from the store listing or gramwallet.io. Never from a link in a message. Check the publisher names above.
2. Create a new wallet. The app generates your recovery phrase, the secret words that are the wallet.
3. Write the words on paper. Not a screenshot, not a notes app, not a message to yourself.
4. Confirm the words when asked. The check exists to make sure you really recorded them.
5. Send a small test amount before anything larger, and confirm it arrives.

Already have a TON wallet such as Tonkeeper or MyTonWallet? You don't need a new one: the MyTonWallet engine imports an existing wallet from its 12 or 24 secret words, and your address and balance stay the same.

Is Gram Wallet the same as Wallet (@wallet)?

No. Wallet, the @wallet bot, is a separate company's product with two parts: Crypto Wallet, a custodial balance that Wallet holds for you, and DeFi Account (formerly TON Wallet), a self-custodial wallet. Wallet's own announcement of September 4, 2026 calls Gram Wallet and Wallet "two separate products". Moving Gram between them is an ordinary transfer from one TON address to another.

Why did TON change its network for Gram Wallet?

The built-in wallet runs on a new wallet contract, tg-wallet-v1, whose code is stored in the TON network's configuration. On August 27, 2026 validators were asked to vote it in "for use with the native Gram Wallet", and on August 31 Durov wrote that validators had approved it. Because every Telegram wallet points at that shared code, all of them can be upgraded at once by a validator vote rather than one by one.

Wallets you already have are not affected: the new contract is only used by wallets that Telegram creates, and your address and balance don't change.

How do I get Gram into Gram Wallet?

• Inside Telegram: Wallet's announcement says Gram Wallet lets you "buy and send Gram in a couple of taps".
• From an exchange: buy GRAM, then withdraw it to your wallet address and choose the TON network. Exchanges list the coin as GRAM, sometimes as "Gram (prev. Toncoin)".
• From another wallet: send Gram to your Gram Wallet address like any other TON transfer.

Either way, send a small amount first. A transfer on the blockchain cannot be reversed.

Can I use Gram Wallet with Telegram mini apps?

Yes. Both the built-in wallet and the app are in the official TON Connect wallet list, the standard that mini apps and websites use to ask a wallet to connect and to approve payments. An app shows only the wallets it has added to its own picker, so a very new wallet may not appear everywhere yet. A real connection opens your wallet and asks you to approve it. It never asks you to type your recovery phrase.

Gram Wallet scams to watch for

• "Claim GRAM" or "migrate TON". The official TON channel's warning, word for word: "Any site, bot, or link asking you to 'claim GRAM' or 'migrate TON' is a scam." The rename needed no action from anyone.
• "Early access" to the built-in wallet. Telegram rolls it out through its own app updates. A bot or a person offering to unlock it is after your account or your money.
• Look-alike apps. Check the publisher before you install, and never install a wallet from a link in a chat.
• Requests for your secret words. No support agent, giveaway or app ever needs them.

Gram Wallet FAQ

Is Gram Wallet free?

Creating either wallet is free. Durov describes transactions in the built-in wallet as zero-fee. Other TON wallets pay the network's small transaction fees.

Why can't I see Gram Wallet in my Telegram?

Telegram is rolling it out gradually, starting with a select group of users on August 31, 2026, and has not published a schedule. It arrives through Telegram app updates, and nobody can switch it on for you.

Is Gram the same as Toncoin?

Yes. Toncoin was renamed Gram, ticker GRAM, on June 15, 2026. It is the same coin on the same blockchain, and no swap was needed. See Toncoin Is Now Gram.

Do I need Gram Wallet if I already use Tonkeeper?

No. Any TON wallet holds Gram, and your existing address keeps working. Gram Wallet is an option, not a requirement.

Can Gram Wallet hold Telegram gifts?

The Gram Wallet app's store listing includes Telegram gifts. Telegram has not said what the built-in wallet will hold besides Gram.

What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?

For the self-custodial app, the wallet and everything in it are gone for good. Nobody can reset it. Telegram has not yet documented how recovery works for its built-in wallet.
